In short. August in the Salento is the month when everything happens at once: village festivals, luminarie, patron saints’ feasts, the farewell concert of the Negramaro and the Concertone of the Notte della Taranta, which closes the summer in front of 200,000 people. Here is the calendar, day by day, so you miss nothing.
There are a great many events in the Salento in August, and anyone who spends a summer here knows how it works: in August you do not plan, you cope. Something happens every evening, often several things in the same village, and finding your way between sagre, patron saints’ feasts and concerts without a map gets complicated.
We have gathered all the confirmed events in the Salento in August 2026, arranged by date, from the first day of the month through the Assumption and on to the closing of the month with the Notte della Taranta. The dates are those officially given by the councils, the tourist offices and the organisers; where an event still needs confirming in detail, we say so.

📅 1–2 August: it starts with the Negramaro and the first sagre
The month begins in style. On Saturday 1 August the Negramaro take the stage at the Cave del Duca in Lecce, as part of the Oversound Music Festival: it is billed as the last concert of the “Una storia ancora semplice” tour before the band takes a break, so expect a great many people. On the same day, for anyone who prefers a more rural August, Acquarica del Capo opens its Sagra del Grano — the wheat festival, with hand-made pasta and bruschetta with new oil — and Patù holds the Sagra della Sciuscella, the carob festival.

📅 3–9 August: the Mercatino del Gusto and the first big festivals
The first full week of the month belongs to the Mercatino del Gusto at Maglie, which from 1 to 7 August runs through the whole of the Salento kitchen in one event: hand-made pasta, cheeses, cured meats, wines and traditional sweets, with local producers and live music every night. If you had to pick one event to sum up the Salento in August on the food side, this would be it.
On 3 August at Marittima (Diso) they celebrate the frisella in all its variants, while in the Serra di Castro, at Andrano, they give away pitta culle ulie, the focaccia with black olives — probably the most generous gesture of the whole Salento summer.
From 8 to 15 August, Cutrofiano — the Salento’s City of Ceramics — hosts the 54th handmade ceramics fair: eight evenings between Piazza Cavallotti, the Palazzo Ducale, the Ceramics Museum and the lanes of the old centre, with master craftsmen at work, art exhibitions, concerts and tastings every night from 7 p.m. to midnight. If you care about the most genuine craft in the Salento, that week is unmissable.

📅 10–16 August: Cannole, Specchia and the night of San Rocco
Here the density rises sharply. From 10 to 13 August, Cannole, one of the villages of the Grecià Salentina, holds the Sagra della Municeddha, dedicated to the land snail. Born in 1985, it is still one of the most genuine festivals in the Salento, with people dancing the pizzica until dawn.
On 12 August it is the turn of the Notte Bianca at Specchia, which turns the medieval village into a trail of live music, craft and tastings, with the lit castle behind it. Worth the drive for the atmosphere alone.
The night of San Rocco at Torrepaduli, 15–16 August, is probably the most intense and least touristic event of the whole month. After the procession and the fireworks, at midnight the spontaneous circles begin: rings of tambourine players with people dancing the pizzica pizzica around them, and the pizzica-scherma, the traditional dance of the knives that mimes a duel with bare hands. No amplification, no stage: just the tambourine, until dawn. On 17 August the feast ends with an evening concert.

- 15 August — Santa Maria di Leuca: Assumption fireworks fired from the lighthouse, visible from the sea as well
- 17–18 August — Botrugno: Sagra dell’Anguria, the watermelon festival, with music and a dance competition
📅 17–23 August: the week of the Notte della Taranta
This is the headline week: the travelling Notte della Taranta festival — which set out on 30 July from Corigliano d’Otranto — reaches its final stops. The twenty squares in the 2026 edition, titled Le vie del Mediterraneo, include Calimera, Carpignano Salentino, Nardò, Galatina, Lecce, Martano and Sternatia, before closing on 19 August.
Alongside it, from 21 to 24 August, Porto Cesareo holds its most awaited feast: the Festa di Santa Cesarea, with the procession at sea — the statues carried on boats — and the traditional Palio dei Rioni between rowing crews.

Concertone of the Notte della Taranta — Saturday 22 August, Melpignano. The 29th edition has Ermal Meta as maestro concertatore, with choreography by Fredy Franzutti. Among the guests confirmed so far: Alessandra Amoroso and Levante, with more names to come. The venue is the square of the former Convento degli Agostiniani. Entry is free in the unreserved area; there are paid stands. The evening opens with the pre-Concertone and runs until dawn: light clothes, comfortable shoes, plenty of water, and if you can, arrive several hours early or use the special trains and shuttles of the Ferrovie del Sud Est — parking near the convent is close to impossible. 📅 24–31 August: Sant’Oronzo closes the month in style
The last days of the month belong to Lecce. From 24 to 26 August the city celebrates its patron saint, Sant’Oronzo, with three days of monumental luminarie through the baroque centre, processions and the closing concert in Piazza Sant’Oronzo. It is the biggest feast of the year for the people of Lecce.
On 25 August, at Castro, fish caught fresh in the Strait of Otranto is fried on the spot and served in the streets of the village: the Sagra del Pesce Fritto is the most direct way of closing the summer, with sand still on your feet.
