In short. In a cave near Altamura lies a Neanderthal skeleton that fell down a shaft about 150,000 years ago and has been fused into the rock by calcite ever since. Found on 7 October 1993, it is one of the most complete ever recovered anywhere β and it is still down there, head down, exactly where it landed.
Most famous fossils are in museums. This one has never been removed, and the argument about whether it should be is itself part of the story.

𦴠What was found, and how he got there
A group of cavers exploring the Lamalunga cave, in the countryside just outside Altamura, came on the skeleton in October 1993. From the position it was found in, the reconstruction is grim and simple: the man slipped, fell into a fissure, wedged there β probably injured β and died not long after.
What happened next is why he matters. The cave’s own microclimate and the calcite deposits that built up over him β the same process that makes stalactites β preserved the bones almost perfectly, and at the same time cemented them into the rock. He is the first Neanderthal to reach us essentially intact.
Why Puglia cares. Beyond the state of the remains, the find is evidence that Neanderthals were living this far south β a data point about the species that no reconstruction could supply.
βοΈ Leave him, or lift him
The question comes back every few years. In 2015 a tender for the materials and services needed to build a 3D model of him also contemplated removing the skeleton; the model was made in 2017, a faithful full-scale reconstruction of what he looked like, and the removal was not carried out. More recently a research team proposed taking out just the skull β the one part not absorbed into the limestone, and therefore the one that could physically be extracted.
Geologists have said no, and the reasoning holds. The extraction is not especially difficult, but it is highly risky, and what has kept the skeleton in this condition for 150,000 years is precisely the chemistry and microclimate of the cave it is trapped in. Take him out of that, and you may preserve the data and lose the object.
For now he stays where he is, studied in place with methods that get less invasive every decade.
Seeing it. The cave is not open to general visits. Altamura has a museum dedicated to the find, with reconstructions and the story of the discovery β and the town is worth the trip anyway for its bread.
